Debate Club
The team of Daisy and Lizie came out on top, making the case against the reintroduction of capital punishment. The teams in favour of the motion made some valid arguments, with Gracie and Sophie arguing that capital punishment ensures victims’ rights are protected in cases of severe crime and Noah and Joe centering the safety of working-class communities, raising issues about overcrowding of the prison population. Despite the strong points made by the proponents of the motion, Daisy and Lizzie won the debate, as they successfully framed the debate on their terms with a focus on the failures of deterrence as a mechanism to prevent serious crime and the damage done by executing innocent people.
